Context Map

 Nakkula and Toshalis Chapter 2

What is context mapping? (What did Mitch ask Julian to do?)

In this chapter, Context mapping refers to factors that shape a  youth’s life. It shows the social and personal relationship of the youth in relation to their environment. For an effective development of the youth, accessing the context mapping is very important in order for the youth worker and educator to help them be in the right path of their life and to help them understand their own selves as well.

Mitch asked Julian to see him for a report section, where Julian sat for about 45 minutes answering Mitch’s question. After Julian answered all the questions Mitch asked, Mitch explained to Julian that his goal is not to punish him, but to find a plan that would help him stay out of trouble and guide him to the  right path that would help him figure out himself. From there Mitch accessed Julian’s file to find information about his background, family’s socioeconomic status, and his relationship with his peers in school and professors. Mitch looked at his file to see which factors might have influenced his behavior.

                                                        List the four different identities

Foreclose Identity – Status I which an individual has committed to a life direction o way of being without exploring it carefully and without experiment with alternatives. In this identity status is either thrust upon on a person or simply accepted with little reflection.

Diffuse identity status is one in which there has been little exploration or active consideration of a particular identity and no psychological commitment to one. Individual in this status are easily influenced by others and often change rapidly from one belief or representation to another to fit into changing contexts.

Identity moratorium- is a developmental state in which one actively explores roles and beliefs, behaviors and relationship, but refrains from making commitment.

Achieved identity – this status occurs when the identity crisis is resolved and the commitment to the selected identity is high. It’s typically the result of ap period of high exploration and experimentation.
